Maritime Institute in Gdańsk
Maritime Institute in Gdansk (MIG) has been closely related to the maritime economy for more than 60 years. MIG conducts scientific research, carries out analysis and assessments, and provides consulting expertise in a variety of related fields ranging from operational oceanography to spatial planning and sustainable development of the marine space and coastal areas, just to mention a few.
In the area Maritime Spatial Planning, the first two draft pilot Maritime Spatial Plans (MSP) and the first strategic Environmental Asessment (SEA) for MSP in Poland were elaborated by MIG experts. MIG was also responsible for elaboration of management plans of Polish marine Natura 2000 areas in Gulf of Gdańsk and Vistula Lagoon. In 2015, MIG experts concluded a stock-taking report on Polish sea space as a starting point for official maritime spatial planning in Poland. MIG has participated in key transnational Baltic projects on ICM, blue growth and MSP such and led and coordinated some of them. The MIG MSP unit is composed of four researchers under supervision of Magdalena Matczak (see below profile).
